ROANOKE ISLAND'S OLDEST WOMAN DIES THURSDAY - Mrs. Lucetta Daniels Montague, who was 90 years old on October 19th, died at the family home at Wanchese Thursday morning [Oct. 30, 1958] at 5:50 after an illness of 18 months.
She was the widow of the late McAlister Roughton Montague of Wanchese and a lifetime resident of the community.
She was born Oct. 19, 1868 to George Charles and Nancy Cudworth Daniels.
Six daughters and two sons survive her: Mrs. W.C. Saunders, Mrs. Sallie Daniels, Mrs. Ophelia Daniels, Mrs. Edward Davis of Wanchese, Mrs. Ivy Evans of Manteo, Mrs. Nancy Atkinson of Norfolk, Gus Montague and W. Lanee Montague of Norfolk. Three brothers and four sisters also survive Mrs. Montague: Capt. George C. Daniels of Norfolk, Cass and Luther Daniels of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Arlettie Tillett and Mrs. Lillian Daniesl of Wanchese, Mrs. A.S. Austin of Hatteras and Miss Eldorado Daniels of Norfolk.
For 49 years Mrs. Montague served her community faithfully and well, assisting the mothers of Roanoke Island in bringing into the world some 900 children. Perhaps her record is not surpassed in the county. She was greatly loved by all who knew her.
She kept interest in all her 113 living descendants and she was a faithful member of Bethany Methodist Church. Last week the children of Mrs. Montague gave her a delightful birthday party.
