US Army transport ship records say that SGT George K. Bettis was aboard a ship that embarked from Hoboken NJ in August 1918 as part of Company A, 34th Infantry to fight in Europe during World War I.
The Atlanta Journal reported that George K. Bettis died in Germany on November 9, 1920. Cause of death was pneumonia. He had enlisted in the army and was with the occupying forces for about three months before his death.
