Joseph lived most of his life on a farm near Cassburn, Longueuil Tp., United Counties of Prescott and Russell, Ontario, Canada. Three daughters died very young and they are buried at Cassburn alongside their mother, Sarah Jane (McNally) Howes. After Sarah died in 1901, Joseph went to live with his son Francis "Frank" in Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario, Canada (1911 census). According to his obit, Joseph accompanied Frank and family when they moved to Duhamel, Alberta, in 1915. Joseph died at Duhamel 19 Oct 1920 and was buried there.
