Bruce Douglas Harris, 61, of West Frankfort died at 6:18 a.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010, at his home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, with Masonic rites performed at 7 p.m. by the Akin Masonic Lodge 749 of Thompsonville. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastors Pete White and Gilbert Evans officiating. Burial will be in the Brady Cemetery, Akin, with military rites performed by the Thompsonville American Legion.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 520 S. 7th St., Vincennes, IN 47591, or the Bethlehem General Baptist Church, 9 W. Jefferson Ave., Vincennes, IN 47591.

Mr. Harris was born on Feb. 10, 1949 in Christopher, the son of James Harris and Imogene (Crawford) Harris. He married the former Marilyn Puckett on Oct. 16, 1971, and she survives.

Bruce worked as a union coal miner for 7-1/2 years, then worked for Old Ben Coal Company in the safety department. He then became a special investigator for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, from which he retired in 2009.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1966-1969 during the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion in Vincennes, Ind. He was a member of the Akin Masonic Lodge 749, Thompsonville, for 40 years, a member of Plasters Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Thompsonville, and attended the Bethlehem General Baptist Church, Vincennes, Ind.

Bruce loved to ride motorcycles and spend time with his family and friends.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Marilyn Harris, West Frankfort; a daughter, Miranda Harris Parker, West Frankfort; a son, Brock Harris and wife, Beth, Thompsonville; two granddaughters, Kennedy and Kameryn Harris, both of Thompsonville; a brother, Keith Harris, Christopher; his stepmother, Betty Harris, West Frankfort; a nephew, Brandon Harris, Thompsonville; and several other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He loved his family and will be dearly missed.

Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents.
