Delmont - Herman, 84, entered eternal life in Christ on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at his home in rural Delmont. Celebration of Life services are 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour. Burial is in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Delmont, with military honors. Visitation is at the church on Wednesday from 4-7 PM, followed by a 7 PM Prayer Service. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Alice of Delmont; son, Sherman Walter (Lori) of Delmont, SD; son, Perry James (Cindy) of Lonsdale, MN; son, Cameron Clay (Janet) of Loveland, CO; daughter, Laurie Anne (Mike) Wallen of Aurora, SD; son, Garrett John (Stephanie) of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Peggy Jeanne (Doug) Te Grotenhuis of Orange City, IA

Herman Konrad Fuerniss June 1st, 1926 – January 2nd, 2011

Visitation will be 4-7 pm Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 with a Prayer Service at 7 pm, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Armour, SD. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, January 6, 2011, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Armour, SD. Lunch following the service. Interment at St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery south Delmont, with military honors.

Herman Konrad Fuerniss was born June 1st, 1926 on the Fuerniss homestead farm, nine miles south and one and one-half east of Delmont, SD. He was baptized June 20th, 1926 at St. Paul Lutheran Church south Delmont by the Rev. F. C. Gade. He was confirmed June 30th, 1940 by the Rev. L. J. Fuchs. Herman’s confirmation hymn was #335, My Maker, Be Thou Nigh and confirmation verse, Psalm 1:1,2. Herman was at home when he entered eternal life in Christ, January 2nd, 2011 at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 2 days.

Herman attended school at Choteau Creek (Hilltop) #9 and graduated from Delmont High School in May of 1944. He entered the United States Army December 15th, 1950 beginning his service at Camp McCoy, WI, then, leaving for Germany September 21st, 1951. He returned to the United States November 20th, 1952 and was honorably discharged at the military rank of T. Sgt. December 11th, 1952 at Custer, MI.

Herman married Alice Marie Gunnare December 4th, 1955 at the home of Erik and Anna (Innala) Gunnare south of Delmont, SD. Herman and Alice farmed south of Delmont, the last 52 years on the Fuerniss homestead—they never retired. Herman and Alice were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) south Delmont until the church closing in November of 2003. After this time, they joined Redeemer Lutheran Church, Armour, SD (Missouri Synod) where they have continued as saints and members to this day. Herman was a member of the American Legion Post 249, Delmont, SD for 58 years. He served on Choteau Creek rural school boards, Choteau Creek township board, and held several church offices including chairman and elder.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, whom he loved dearly through 55 years of married life; son, Sherman Walter and Lori (Hogrefe) Fuerniss of Delmont, SD; son, Perry James and Cindy (Paulsen) Fuerniss of Lonsdale, MN; son, Cameron Clay and Janet (Brown) Fuerniss of Loveland, CO; daughter, Laurie Anne and Mike Wallen of Aurora, SD; son, Garrett John and Stephanie (Albertus) Fuerniss of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Peggy Jeanne and Doug Te Grotenhuis of Orange City, IA; twelve grandchildren: Tatianna and Erik Fuerniss (Sherm’s), James and Anna Fuerniss (Perry’s), Karisa and Luke Fuerniss (Cam’s), Miranda and Trevor Wallen (Laurie’s), Noah Fuerniss (Garrett’s), and Jennifer, Sarah, and Aaron Te Grotenhuis (Peggy’s); brother, Arnold and Helene (Laufer) Fuerniss of Delmont, SD; sister, Mildred (Fuerniss) Peters of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Sharon (Peters) Harrington of Delmont, SD; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law in the Gunnare family, and 44 nephews and nieces.

Herman was preceded in death by his father and mother, Emil A. and Augusta (Vesper) Fuerniss, one brother, Walter Fuerniss and one sister, Lillian (Fuerniss) Fauth, brother-in-law, Helmuth Fauth, brother-in-law, Norbert Peters, nine brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law in the Gunnare family, three nephews and one niece.

Pallbearers: Sherman Fuerniss, Perry Fuerniss, Cameron Fuerniss, Laurie (Fuerniss) Wallen, Garrett Fuerniss, and Peggy (Fuerniss) Te Grotenhuis.
