Bernardo Casillas y Cornejo was the son of Ruperto Casillas y Gómez and María Refugia Cornejo y Gómez. He was baptized at San Francisco de Asís Catholic Church, Tepatitlán, Jalisco, on August 29, 1888. He entered the United States as a railroad worker on September 12, 1910, at El Paso, Texas. He re-entered the U.S. with his brother Espiridion on June 8, 1912, at Laredo, Texas, en route to San Antonio, Texas. He was single at the time. His right hand was crushed while employed by the railroad requiring a skin graft to his palm (covered by hat in photo). Bernardo joined the rest of his family in moving to the United States permanently in 1918 and was still single and living with his parents at 1523 19th Street, Santa Monica, in the 1920 Census. Bernardo returned to Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco, to marry Gregoria Regalado y Patiño about 1921. His younger brother, Espiridion Casillas y Cornejo, and his paternal grandfather, Eustaquio Casillas y Tolosa, are also buried in this cemetery.
