Herman Tanner was from Warren County, McMinnville, TN. The son of William Tanner and Josephine "Josie" Couch-Tanner. William was born (possibly 1828) and raised in McMinnville, TN and he married Josephine Couch on June 17, 1886. William is buried in McMinnville without a headstone.

Met Marian Townsend at the tender age of 16 in Mexia, Texas. They were soon married - May 7, 1916 in Limestone County, Mexia, TX. by the JP. Marian's father was very unhappy that the two married. He did not think the young man was proper or good enough for Marian. Long life of harbored anger to bear. They had three children - Willard Archie Tanner , Jack Dempsey Tanner *Dody* - (also found in Find a grave)and a daughter Marian Elizabeth Tanner. Herman was co-owner of the Showboat Cafe at 1609 Bryan Street in Downtown Dallas (2021 Near Thanksgiving Tower) in the 1930's. He died when Marian was 13 -- leaving a huge hole in a little girl's heart.

The couple's daughter, Marian grew up and married Bernard Nod Barnes, Jr. *also in Find a Grave*.

When Herman John died, his guest book said that his father was Jim Tanner, but his Mother's marriage record said William Jim(or William's) brother shows to be J.A. Tanner. ?!
Cause of death: Texas death certificate states the cause of death was primarily septicemia. This caused a kidney infection that contributed to his death.
