PARIS - Mary Anona Bird Grandy, 92, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at the skilled nursing facility in Montpelier, Idaho.
She was born March 19, 1908, at Paris, Idaho, to John Henry and Ettie Rebecca Nate Bird, and was one of pioneer ancestry, maternally and paternally.

She married Weldon Emil Grandy on June 1, 1933, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.

She graduated from Weber State College in Ogden, Utah, in 1930. She taught as an elementary school teacher in the public schools of Idaho and Utah for 19 years at Pegram, Paris, Fish Haven and Georgetown, Idaho, and Salt Lake City, Utah. She received a meritorious certificate for "Distinctive Teaching Services" from Idaho Gov. Don Samuelson in 1970.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served as a stake Primary president of the Bear Lake Stake. She was a ward Primary president, and served on the stake Sunday school board both of the Bear Lake Stake and the Monument Park West Stake in Salt Lake City. She was a counselor in the Young Women's program, a cultural refinement leader in Relief Society, and held numerous other church teaching positions.

She was president of the Bear Lake County Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and was also their historian for many years. She was a member of the Paris Literary Club. She was talented in teaching music, writing poetry and entertaining by singing in a duet from music she helped compose. She had a great love of flowers, trees and the great outdoors.

Anona is survived by one daughter, Janice, of Pocatello, Idaho; and one son, Gary Grandy of Victor, Idaho; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Blythe Orr of Montpelier; and two brothers, Weyn Bird of Paris, and Floyd Bird of Montpelier. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon, two daughters, Mary Lee Higley and Margean Grandy, one granddaughter, Janae, two brothers, Kenneth and Thaniel, and two sisters, LaVilla Bird and Genevieve Jewell.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 24, at 11 a.m. in the Paris Stake Center, where friends may call that morning from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Paris Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary of Montpelier.
