James R. Barnhart, 72, a resident of Altoona, Kansas, died Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kansas. He was born November 9, 1938 in Altoona KS, the son of Charles Austin and Ruth (Briles) Barnhart.

James served in the U.S. Army and then as a Petty Officer First Class in the U.S. Navy, where he later retired, having served more than 25 years. He also worked in maintenance for Cobalt boats for five years.

He was an active member of the Verdigris Valley Christian Fellowship in Altoona.

On March 12, 1988, he married Bernadine "Bernie" Hogan in Fredonia. She survives him at their home in Altoona.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Bernie, include:

Two Step Children:
Two Brothers & Sister-In-Laws:
Three Sisters & Brother-In-Laws:
Eight Grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Oler; and one son, Jimmy Barnhart.

A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Verdigris Valley Christian Fellowship in Altoona, Kansas. Services will follow at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jim Raymond officiating.

Burial will immediately follow in the Altoona Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in James' name with the Verdigris Valley Christian Fellowship and contributions can be sent to the funeral home.
