Mrs. Kathleen C. Bishop, age 96, died Sunday evening. Kack, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren and friends was born in the Bethesda community of Durham County. She was the daughter of the late Lula Jane Edwards and William Randolph Cooley. Mrs. Bishop graduated in 1929 with honors from Bethesda High School. Her career included prominent positions as office manager for the Dollar Store, Cavin Enterprises and Pickard Roofing Company.
She shared her musical talent as a piano teacher, church organist, pianist, director of children's choirs and a member of the Durham Civic Choral Society. She entertained at numerous civic events and was honored with an honorary membership from the Durham Lions Club as she retired from public appearances as a musician. In her retirement, she continued to share her musical and writing gifts with her fellow residents of Emerald Pond. Mrs. Bishop was one of the oldest living members of Yates Baptist Church, where she co-authored "The First Hundred Years of Yates Baptist Church", served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and mission activities leader.
Mrs. Bishop was predeceased in 1999 by Carl Monroe Bishop, her husband of 64 years.
Survors include: son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Chris Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Judi Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Linda B. and Bill Hoyle; grandchildren, Jordan Bishop, Ryland Bishop, Megan B. Moore and husband, Steve, Zachary Bishop, Kathie H. Masten and husband, Bill, Will Hoyle and wife, Carrie; six great-grandchildren; sister, Ann J. Aldridge; sister-in-law, Celeste B. Ray, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the Yates Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Don Gordon and Dr. Harry Byrd will preside. Burial in Bethesda Baptist church cemetery will be private. The Rev. John Frederick
will preside. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial gifts to Yates Baptist Church, Attention Mrs. Molly Simmons, 2819 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, NC 27707 or to Duke Homecare and Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Drive, Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.
