Mary Burrus was the daughter of Thomas R. Burrus and Achsah (Clark) Burrus of Hyde County, North Carolina. She married Wilson Wynne Norman on June 13, 1849. They were the parents of three children: Melissa Chesson, Harriet "Hattie" Wynne, and an unnamed child who died in infancy. Following her husband's death, she married Jeremiah R. Selby on May 20, 1862. Three children were born to them: Chesson, Mary Beulah, and Mary Florence. These children died in childhood.
