EARLY DAY LOAL RESIDENT DIES

Wesley Theodore Rupe Sr. 80, a resident of Horton for the past 50 years and one of its most respected citizens, passed away at the Horton Hospital Thursday night at 9:50 from complications accompanying hardening of the arteries.

Although frail in health, he was able to walk down town almost daily to visit with friends. He entered the hospital Tuesday after having been stricken with his last illness.

Mr. Rupe worked for the Rock Island Railroad for a while after moving from Missouri, then he learned the butcher trade which he followed until 1951 when he retired from active work. He had operated his own market and grocery store here for a number of years and at one time of his retirement, was manager of the meat market in the J.H. Fattig Grocery.

He was born in Breckenridge, Missouri on December 4, 1873, the son of William Henderson and Ann Lucas Rupe.

He attended school in Breckenridge and was married August 21, 1895, to Miss Mary Jane Clark in Polo, Missouri. Recorded in Kingston, Caldwell County, Missouri.

They lived in Polo, Missouri for nine years when Mr. Rupe worked for the Milwaukee Railroad. They were the parents of 11 children, eight of whom survive.

Besides raising a large family of their own children Mr. and Mrs. Rupe also reared three grandchildren who came into their lives when quite young. Mr. Rupe was a devoted family man and during all of his married life his main interest was in his home and in earning a livelihood for and educating his children and his grandchildren. His main hobby and outside interests was baseball and up until the time of his last illness was an enthusiastic fan.

Mr. and Mrs. Rupe celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here with a family dinner in August 1945.

Besides his wife of the home, Mr. Rupe is survived by 69 decendents, 8 children, 27 grandchildren and 34 great
grandchildren. His children, which include: Mrs. Ben (Lucille) Asquith of Dayton, Oregon, Mrs. Carl (Frankie) Bechtold, Westley T. Rupe, Jr. and Lee Rupe of Horton, Mrs. Georgia Brydon and Mrs. Edward (Norene) Long of Kansas City, Missouri, William Rupe of Hanford, California, Mrs. Edward (Elsie) Broughton of Azusa, California. The three grandchildren whom the Rupes reared are Mrs. Donna Turner of Independence, Missouri, Mrs. Mary Etta Kreider of Atchison and Darrell Haggard serving in the U.S. Navy stationed at Corpus Christie, Texas. Mr. Rupe is also survived by three brothers, Walter A. Rupe of Baker, Oregon, Elza Rupe of Kansas City, Missouri and Ralph Rupe of Lathrop, Missouri, three sisters, Mrs. Maude Roberts of St. Joseph, Missouri, Mrs. Josie Shufler of Polo, Missouri and Mrs. Carrie Murray of Washington, D.C.

Two daughters, Lyda Rupe and Mrs. Grace Torkelson and one son Melvin Rupe preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Rake Mortuary with Reverend Ira Nicklin of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the family lot at the Horton Cemetery. Vocalist were Mrs. Earl Narans and Mrs. Oscar Dahl with Mrs. A.I. Rake the accompanist.
