Unadilla - Mrs. Adelia Root Harris, 80, of Uadilla, died on Sunday March 3, 1968, in The Hospital, Sidney, following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla with Rev. Richard Stults officiating. Burial will be at Prospect hill Cemetery, Sidney, at a later date. She was born March 27, 1887 in Sidney. Daughter of Alfred Loomis Root and Rachel (Eggleson)Root. She had one brother, the late Darwin A. Root. Adelia Root was a graduate of Sidney High School in 1904 and the Unadilla Training Class 1906. She graduated from the Oneonta Normal School, class of 1911, and taught in area schools until 1920. On May 11, 1920 she married Stanley Cleveland Harris of Weehawken, New Jersey,(formerly of Sidney)and taught in Weehawken School until 1924. In 1944, Mr. Harris retired from the Police Department and the family established in the former LeRoy Harris house in Unadilla. Following Mr. Harris's death in 1962, Mrs. Harris made her home at the residence of her son, Robert on Route 78. Mrs. Harris was a writer and corresponded regularly with numerous friends throughout the country, although failing health kept her confined during her later years, she maintained a keen interest in local history and furnished much information to newspapers and researchers. An article written by Mrs. Harris appeared in the Tri Town News on January 17, 1968. A resident of Unadilla for 24 years, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include 2 sons, Robert Harris of Unadilla and John Harris of Troy; six grandchildren, Laureen, Pamela and Pattie, of Unadilla and Debby, Johnny and Susan, of Troy; also 2 nieces, Mrs. Leo Curtiss of Hammond, Indiana and Mrs. Robert Walsh of Greenwood Lake.
