Moses was born in Killyverry, County Donegal, to Joseph Houston and Jane Colhoun. In 1866 he married Margaret Chambers from nearby Brockagh. Both families attended Newtowncunningham Presbyterian.
In April 1885 the couple immigrated to America with their nine children. Their tenth, James, was born in Ellsworth, Kansas, in 1888.
By 1900 the family was in Montreal where Moses worked as an insurance collector. After Margaret's 1908 death, Moses moved west to Alberta with daughters Rebecca and Catherine to join Annie and her husband Robert King.
