Margaret was born in Brockagh, County Donegal, Ireland to farmer Joseph Chambers and his wife.

In 1866 she married Amos Houston from neighboring Killyverry in the Presbyterian Church at Ballylennon. In April 1885 the family immigrated to Kansas where James was born, then to Montreal before the turn of the century.
