William George Barr, 76, of Nevada, died of complications from leukemia on Thursday, January 23, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
He was born on February 10, 1926, in Eldon, the son of William and Metta (Tetmeyer) Allen. He served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II and Korea. He married Lela Mae Kolbus on September 25, 1955, in Owasa.
He had been employed as a tractor mechanic at Jewell Implement Co. and at the Hamilton County Conservation Commission. He recently had been employed in the dietary division at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. He was a member of the William C. Ball American Legion Post #48 in Nevada and a retired scoutmaster. He enjoyed mechanics, was a baseball fan, and loved cars and tools. He had been a resident of Nevada since 1995 moving from Jewell.
Surviving are three sons, William Rechkemmer of Ashdown, Arkansas, George Barr of Cedar Falls, and Carl Barr of Ankeny; two daughters, Catherine Barr of Waterloo and Mary Moore of Ames; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents; his adopted parents, the Rev William and Catherine Barr; his wife Lela on March 2, 1995; an infant son, Steven Douglas; three brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services at Chet Ryan Mortuary with Pastor David Burling of Memorial Lutheran Church officiating. Burial with military rites in the Jackson Township Cemetery near Owasa.
