Grandma and Grandpa were exact opposites. She was the keeper of the house and more stern and set in her ways. She was a loving Grandma, but she had her ways and nothing changed them. It seems she was always in the kitchen baking sugar cookies or dunking butter bread in her coffee. She never drove a car and briskly walked everywhere, swinging her arms as she walked. Every year after Midnight Mass at St. Mary's Church we would all walk, through the snow, to her house for a meal of pork and grits. And of course sugar cookies!!!! Our Christmas gift were oranges, apples and, of course, sugar cookies!! In her last days we were called to Maria Joseph Nursing Home several times and the priest would be there also for her Last Rites. Once, as soon as he was done, she opened her eyes and said "Fooled you, didn't I." Well, that was one of many times she fooled us. Grandma lost her teeth there and it was discovered too late that they were buried with her room mate. She gave us many laughs and many happy memories. Mary Downing Mahan
