Nelson's self emloyed occupations consisted of a photographer from about 1870 to 1873. The 1880 census recorded his occupation as a store clerk in A F Betts clothing store. In 1889 he formed a limited partnerhsip with S R Trumbull, a fellow mason in a clothing store business.In April of 1890 the partnership was dissolved and Trumbull retained the business. Within the next two years, the family moved to Syracuse, N Y. Nelson then age 54, was employed as a commercial traveler for shoes. Alsever was an active member of the Pulaski Lodge and the Park Methodist Episcopal Church. After moving to Syracuse, he joined the Root Post, G.A.R., the Central City Lodge and the University Methodist Episcopal Church. After his wife's death in 1918, he went to live with his won William where he died. Funeral arrangements were from his son's home. Burial was in Morningside/Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse
