The son of Frederick and Jane Love, Lewis came to Oregon in 1849 with his wife and seven children. He was a farmer, grocery store owner, and Justice of the Peace. He owned and operated extensive ferry services (hence the title "Captain") and ran grist and saw mills, a steamboat business, and he was a hotel owner. His various business aided the growth of Portland, Oregon.
