Idaho Falls – Hazel Berniece Shirley, a Lewiston resident, died Thursday of a heart attack at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center at Idaho Falls. She had been visiting family the area. She was 90.

She was a twin born March 23, 1904 at Brush, Colo to Elijah Judson and Myrtle Chain Long Halterman. Her twin sister died at one day old. She attended Colorado schools before moving to Boise in 1912. She lived at Boise until 1960.

She married Houston Melburn Shirley August 26, 1922, at Boise. She was a homemaker.

Her husband died Sept 8, 1948.

She moved to the Asotin/Anatone area in 1960. She then moved to Gold Bend, Ore., and Yakima before moving to Idaho Falls in 1984. She moved to Lewiston in 1990.

She was a member of the Salvation Army. She was active in WCTU and was president of Yakima for many years.

She is survived by six sons. Elden Leroy Shirley of Boise, Karl Truman Shirley of Idaho Falls, Curtis Lamont Shirley of Drummond, Idaho, Bonney Melburn Shirley of Indianapolis, Ind., Donney Houston Shirley of Lewiston, and Ellis Freeman Shirley of Yakima, A daughter, Sonnie Gay Anderson of Craig, Alaska, three brothers, George Halterman of Fairfield, Calif., Calvin Halterman of Colorado, and Lester Halterman of Pocatello, and three sisters, Katherine Pope of Idaho Falls, Edna Bebb of Pocatello and Pearl Chamberlin of Clarkston.

She is also survived by 42 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Four sons, Darrell Eugene, Verle O'Dell, Allen Lorain and Merle Dean Shirley, Two sisters and one brother died previously.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Falls.

The funeral will be held at 1 pm Tuesday at the Wood Chapel of the Pines at Idaho Falls. Major Laurie Kirk, former director of the Idaho Falls Salvation Army, now serving in Montana, will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 3 pm Wednesday at West Hills Memorial Park at Yakima.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Salvation Army, 605 North Boulevard, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402.
