Life was hard in the coal fields of the Hocking Valley and on 28 Nov 1894 widower Thomas Catchpole, father of 6 children, married the widow Martha Shaw Brunton and adopted her 6 children. This can be seen on the 1900 census forms. The widown Brunton was born in Scotland and her first husband in Ireland. Both Thomas Catchpole and first wife Elizabeth Nelson who died in 1892 were born in England. Refer to lines 14 mother, and 15 father of the census form.

Thomas Catchpole's 6 children by his first wife Elizabeth Nelson Catchpole were Thomas b1889, Lizzie b1887, Maggie b1884, Sarah b1883, Samuel b1880, and John b1878. John and Samuel were born in England. The Catchpoles emigrated to the U.S. in 1881 and settled in Perry County, Ohio were children Maggie, Lizzie and Thomas were born. Thomas Catchpole operated a saloon in Moxahala, Perry County, Ohio.

The 6 children adopted of Martha Shaw Brunton were James b1887, Facey (Fannie) b1885, Alex b1880, Thomas b1879, Robert b1873 and Andrew b1871, in all a total of 12 children. Some of the adopted children show up in records as both Catchpoles and Bruntons. The widowed father of Thomas, Andrew also lived with them. Thus in this combined family of 15 people there were 2 people named Andrew and 3 people named Thomas.

Gravesite Details

The marker is confusing. Martha Shaw Brunton Catchpole was Andrew's mother, not his wife. Martha's 1st husband Thomas Brunton is buried here and 2nd husband Thomas Catchpole is buried in Monroe Cemetery.
