Funeral services for Ralph Daniel Higginbotham, 93, will be Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Parker Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Mack Amis and the Rev. Dr. Billy Harris officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday at the church from 10-11 a.m. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery with K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center directing services.

Mr. Higginbotham died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at NHC in Anniston.

He is survived by his children, Diane Higginbotham of New York, New York; Nancy Higginbotham Bryson of St. Simons Island, Georgia; Ann Jackson Woodrow of Jacksonville, Alabama; Miriam Jackson Gaines of Millbrook, Alabama and Rebecca Jackson Wilson of Jacksonville, Alabama; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lee Burnham Higginbotham, his wife, Miriam Cockrell Jackson Higginbotham, his son, Ralph Daniel Higginbotham, Jr. and three sisters.

Mr. Higginbotham, a native of Flat Rock, Alabama, was a long time resident of Anniston and Jacksonville. He was a graduate of Anniston High School and Anniston Business College. He worked for The Anniston Star sixteen years prior to purchasing Stephens Printing Company in 1946. Later he bought Ben Sawyer Printing Company and Moore Printing Company, which became Higginbotham, Inc. From 1963-1974 he served as President of Calhoun Publishing Co. and Publisher of The Jacksonville News.

His educational involvement and service includes being a member of the Anniston City Board of education for fifteen years, nine as its president, president of the Anniston Committee for Better Schools, member of the Alabama Advisory Committee on Vocational Education, member of the Southeastern Educational Research Laboratory in Atlanta, director and president of the Alabama Association of School Boards, and a delegate to the National Association of School Boards. In 1974 and again in 1978 voters elected him to the Alabama State Board of Education. Mr. Higginbotham became a Trustee of Judson College in 1968 and served until 1980.

As an active member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church he served as Deacon, Deacon Chairman, Sunday School Director and teacher, church clerk, and Building Committee Chairman. In 1991 Mr. Higginbotham was ordained to the ministry and assumed the position of Minister to Senior Adults which he held until 1996. He also held leadership positions with the Calhoun County Baptist Association.

Civic offices included President of East Central Cerebral Palsy Organization, Director of the United Way, Director and President of the Anniston Exchange Club, Director of the Anniston Rotary Club and several terms as Director of the Anniston Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Gideons, Masons, and U.C.T.

He received the following honors: The Anniston Star "Man of the Year" in 1970, an honorary Associate Degree from Gadsden State Junior College, honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Judson College, membership in the Alabama Educational Leadership Hall of Fame and the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Baraca Class, Phebean Class, and Woodcarvers of Parker Memorial Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Benjamin Bryson, Samuel Bryson, Taylor Woodrow, Douglas Woodrow, Brandon Maye, Collin Adcock, Daniel Gaines, and Bobby Wingo.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the building fund at Parker Memorial Baptist Church.
