One of the sons of John Feather and Sarah Jane Crossley of Keighley. His father was a worsted manufacturer, managing the Hope Mills of Keighley for some 20 years. His sons moved to the States in the 1880s and worked in Lawrence, Woburn, Dorchester, Worcestor and Holyoke.

George also had a brother, Frank Feather, who while originally was in the textile industry, became an established sheet metal fabricator in Holyoke and was well known in city politics and as a musician.
