Like most of the Doyle's and the Wilkie's, he worked as a Boilermaker (metal fabricator/welder) at Bethlehem Steel Atlantic Works shipyard in East Boston up through World War II. After the war, he owned and operated a scrap metal business in East Boston as well as a small sheet metal shop in Winchester. Like his brother, Joseph Francis, he was about 5'7, black hair and blue eyes. He never had kids, likely because he served time in prison between 1911 and 1917 for his involvement in a gang of robbers who worked the South End and Revere. If you have access to the Historical Boston Globe through the library, search on the Plakias Restaurant Holdup in the South End in 1911 ; there are several articles on there.

Despite his tangles with the Law, Walter ended up being a nice guy. He lived with his dying mother after his release from prison. He also cared for his sister's children, and had a close relationship with Christina Kelly (his niece) whom he looked after while Christina Doyle was away in the public hospital.
