Margaret Montgomery was born in County Antrim, Ireland; daughter of John & Anne Montgomery. In October 1772, Margaret and her family departed from Larne, Ireland aboard the ship "Lord Dunluce" for Charleston, South Carolina arriving just before the New Year. On January 6, 1773 Margaret was granted 100 acres on the waters of Calhoun Creek; which indicates she was single and over 15 when she arrived.

In November 1773, Margaret married William Bell, with whom she had eleven children:

William Bell, Jr. (1775 – 1845)
James M. Bell (1778 – 1809)
Margaret Bell McGill (1780 – 1825)
John Bell (1781 – 1849)
Charles Bell (1785 – 1844)
Thomas Bell (1785 – 1850)
Hugh Bell (1789 – 1864)
Elizabeth "Betsy" Bell McKell (1790 – 1842)
Adam Bell (1791 – 1833)
Robert Bell (1795 – 1848)
Isabella Bell Montgomery (1797 – 1891)
