In 1817, Isabella Bell married her cousin, Hugh Montgomery, son of Charles and Margaret [née Reynolds] Montgomery. They emigrated to Starkville with many of their Bell, Montgomery, McKell and Nason families around 1835 from the Little River, Fairfield District area of South Carolina.
Isabella Montgomery was affectionately known by her many nephews & nieces as "Aunt Ibby" and lived in Starkville for nearly 60 years. She and her husband were charter members of the A.R.P. Church that once stood by the cemetery they now rest.
In 1878, their son, William Bell Montgomery, was a leader in securing that the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Mississippi (now known as Mississippi State University) was located in Starkville. He served as the local trustee for 26 years. Montgomery Hall on the campus of Mississippi State is named for the Montgomery family.
Isabella Bell Montgomery departed this life on the 5th day of May 1891 died at her home, The Cedars, just north of Starkville, in the 94th year of he age. She was laid to rest near her beloved husband, Hugh; daughters Margaret Jane and Nancy Elizabeth [née Montgomery] Bardwell.
