Son of Rolla and Vanie (Watkins) VanCamp, deceased, was born in Wetzel County, W. Va. Feb 6, 1838. He is not the only patriot of his father's family, a brother, Franklin, served in 7th W. Va. V.I. and re-enlisted in Co. C. 15th W. Va V. I. Comrade VanCamp was engaged in farming when the war began and was enrolled at the age of 25 years Aug 15, 1862, at Wheeling, W.Va. He served in Co. C. 15th W. Va V.I. as a private-later as Sergt- and rendered some important service during that trying time. He was wounded in 1864 at the Battle of Winchester by minie ball in right shoulder and was treated for same in hospitals at Richmond, Va., and Stanton, Va. three weeks. In 1864 he was captured and held one month in rebel prison. He was furloughed for sixty days in 1864 and returned to his command at Richmond, Va. He was distinguished for bravery in the battles of Middle Brook, Lexington, Snickers Gap, Lynchburg and Winchester. He was honorably discharged June 14, 1865, at Wheeling, W. Va. Comrade VanCamp was united in marriage to Martha Elliot June 10, 1867, and the result of this union is as follows; Ella B., Rolla J., Laura, Isapine, dec., Deborah, Frank, Margaret E., Napoleon and Dora, dec. His wife was born in Jefferson, O., in 1848, and was a daughter of James and Deborah (Warner) Elliott, dec. Comrade VanCamp follows farming as an avocation near VanCamp, W. Va., which is his postoffice address.
