Jay served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942-1946 and was a proud Veteran of World War II. He served overseas as Military Specialty Carpenter/Draftsman in Okinawa and Honshu, Japan. He met his first wife, Bessie Herrin, while stationed for training in Gulfport, Mississippi. They married on June 26, 1943 and were blessed with one son, Joel McFerran. They divorced by the end of 1944.

He then met his future bride, June Mary Cobb while on leave in St. Louis and they married on August 21, 1946 at Eglin Field, Fort Walton in Florida. They were blessed with five children: Cheryl Anita, Jay David, Dianne Joyce, Phillip Gerard, and Paul Elliott.

In the summer of 1961, Jay and June moved their family to Kansas City, Kansas to help with the family-owned and operated West Haven Motel & Restaurant located at 5250 State Avenue. Both worked with Ed and Inez Peterson, along with their daughter Patricia and her husband, Cecil Graves, up until the time of his death. Jay also owned and operated a television repair shop located just west of the motel. Jay was dear husband, father, grandfather, son, nephew, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend to many. In 1964 he became an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Kansas.
