Jan Budz was a Góral from the village of Groń in the Tatra Mountains of SE Poland. He emigrated to Chicago in 1888 and resided in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. He was the owner of the Mountaineers Club at Ashland Avenue and 44th Street. He helped hundreds of friends and family from Podhale by providing room and board at his hotel and tavern. Jan was murdered on Dec 11, 1920 by 3 armed robbers who fatally shot Jan and he bled to death in the police ambulance before reaching Englewood Hospital.
