W.H. Armstrong Rites on Friday
Friends were greatly saddened to learn of the death of William Hugh (Will) Armstrong on Thursday, Jan. 15 at Memorial Hospital of Washington County. Although he had not been well for some time, his stay in the hospital was brief and his passing unexpected.
Mr. Armstrong, who was better known as "Mr. Will" was born Jan 1, 1886 in Washington County, a son of the late James Miles Armstrong and the late Mrs. Armstrong, who was before her marriage Miss Mattie Tucker. He had lived all his life in Washington County except for approximately 20 years which was spent briefly in Savannah and then in Statesboro where he was an employee of the Georgia Employment Service. Upon retirement the family returned to Sandersville to live.
As his minister, the Rev. Dr. W. Miller Decker said of him, he was a dependable person, always optimistic and never becoming discouraged as he went about doing his church work and the living of life each day. After conversing with him his minister said that he would sometimes wonder who was ministering to whom.
"Mr. Will" was active in the district and state work of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as well as his own church, First Christian where he served as an elder. He had served several times as president of the Christian Men's Fellowship of the church as well as serving on numerous church committees. He was well-known and respected and had many friends throughout the state.
Services were held for him on Friday, Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. in his church with his minister officiating. Interment followed in Brownwood Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Mary Irwin, of Sandersville; two daughters, Mrs. Lewis J. Hinely, Augusta, Mrs. Raymond T. Worst, St. Simons Island; sister, Mrs. John C. Jordan, Augusta; two brothers, Harper T. Armstrong, Sylvania, Marion Armstrong, Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren, Lewis, Jr., Ann, Emily and Raymond and Billy Worst of St. SImons; several nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers were Frank J. Garbutt, Sr., George W. Irwin, Jesse D. Mize, Thomas A. Hutcheson, Horace E. Armstrong and Jack Edwards Haynes.
Lang's Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Among the out-of-town persons who attended the funeral were Mrs. James R. Beach and E. Lyle Harvey from the regional office of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Macon.
