Waits 22 Years for Hubby to Return; Now Wife Asks A Divorce - Mabel Scoles waited patiently, hopefully, for 22 years for her husband, Hiram Scoles, to come back to her. When he failed to return after so long a period of desertion, Mrs. Scoles decided to file suit for legal separation. Her petition was placed on file in district court today. Mr. and Mrs. Scoles were married 26 years ago in St. Anthony, Ia. The date was Sept. 2, 1894. In September 1898 Scoles went away and has not returned, nor has he been heard from in recent years." - Waterloo IA Courier - 17 Nov 1920, page 5

DEATH: "Mrs. Mabel Scoles. Committal services for Mrs. Mabel Scoles, 80, who died at 9 a.m. Sunday at Woodlawn Convalescent home, will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ackley Cemetery. The casket will not be opened. Mrs. Scoles was born at Ackley August 13, 1879, the daughter of John and Emma Michaels. She married Hiram Scoles at Marshalltown in 1894. She had made her home in Waterloo for many years. There are no survivors." Waterloo Courier, Feb 2, 1960, page 2

The 1910 census for La Crosse, Wisconsin shows Mabel as a roomer with her 6-year old son Darold. (familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPKG-3FP) Her sister Ella Michaels Selck was a resident of Whitehall, Wisconsin around this time.
