Gladys Lucille Edman VanderWaerdt Thorson, 90, died Friday, September 4, 2009 at Canton Good Samaritan Society. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at Canton United Methodist Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with family present from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Gladys was born November 5, 1918, in Beresford, SD, to Abel and Rose Mary (Andrews) Edman. She attended schools at Beresford and graduated from Beresford High School in 1936. Gladys married Harry VanderWaerdt May 3, 1939 in Sioux Falls, SD and they had seven children. She later married William Thorson on September 29, 1984 in Canton. Following high school, Gladys worked at the Corner Café in Canton. After her marriage to Harry, she was a farmer's wife, and after Harry's death in 1961, she was a secretary to the principal at Augustana Academy in Canton, and later worked as a nurse's aide at Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital. She was a long time member of Canton United Methodist Church. Gladys is survived by her children- Richard VanderWaerdt of Albert Lea, MN, Linda Myers of Longview, TX, Roy VanderWaerdt of Worthing, SD, Daniel VanderWaerdt of Canton, SD, Julie Rock of Brandon, SD, and Vickie Christensen of Sioux Falls, SD; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lyle Edman of BellePlaines, MN. She was preceded in death by borth husbands, her daughter, Mary Sehr, and eight siblings, brothers- Maynard, Charles, Ray, and Robert and sisters- Lily Lounsberry, Emma Fodness, Evelyn Lippert, and Lois Mae Jensen.May the Lord grant his true and faithful servant the reward she deserves.
