"An ‘empty' rifle claimed toll of another life last Sunday, shortly after noon, when Gottfried Janke, Jr, son of Mr and Mrs Gottfried Janke, well known farmers residing 14 miles southwest of Odessa, was killed while cleaning a rifle on the front porch of his home. The family had just returned from church when the young man took his rifle into the sunlight of the porch to clean it. It is supposed that he thought the gun was empty and in jamming the cleaning rod through the barrel, the shell was discharged. The boy's arm warded off the rod, which passed to the side of his head, but the bullet entered the lower part of his throat, piercing the trachea and he died within five minutes. He was sixteen years of age. His parents, two brothers and four sisters survive him. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, from the Yanke church in that community, by the Rev Reiker, of Warden, and interment was made in the cemetery there.
