William Ray married Elizabeth Thomas, who was born in 1771 in Virginia. Moving to Georgia, their first child, Winford, was born in 1801. All of their children were born in the state of Georgia, where William was a land owner and a farmer, living in Lee and Washington counties.
William and his family moved to Shelby County, Al. about 1820, were in Bibb County about 1823. He died in Talledega County, Al at the age of 94. His son, Gabriel, moved to Upshur County, Texas about 1859.
Rev. Bluford Walter Brown, oldest grandson of William and Elizabeth (Thomas)Ray, was an Upshur County Legislator in the Thirteenth Texas Legislature. He is generally credited with naming Gregg County, Texas, which was named in honor of General John Gregg, a distinguished Texas Statesman and an officer of the Army of the Confederacy.
