Elizabeth Blanton

NICHOLS - Elizabeth Reynolds Blanton, widow of James P. Blanton, died Friday, September 23, 2005, after several months of declining health. Mrs. Blanton was born Hattie Elizabeth Reynolds in Bishopville, S.C., to Purlie Houston Reynolds, Sr. and Lou Mood Alexander Reynolds, on September 9, 1912.

Mrs. Blanton is succeeded by three sons and their wives, Lloyd H. Blanton and Melba of Clemson, SC, James Keith Blanton and Betty of Nichols, and Frankie C. Blanton and Nancy of Nichols, SC.

There are eight grandchildren: *James Houston Blanton of Greenville, SC and *Cyndy A. Blanton of Central, SC, *James Darren Blanton of Little River, SC and *Tonya Rainbolt of Jacksonville, FL, *Gretta B. Stroud of Loris, SC, *Tammy Rogers of Nichols, SC, Frankie C. Blanton, II of Simpsonville, SC and *Eric Blanton of Nichols, SC.

There are five great-grandchildren: *Sophia Blanton and *Kelee Rainbolt, *Brandon Arnette and *Frankee Dayle McMillan, and *Tyler Rogers.

Mrs. Blanton was the last survivor of nine siblings: Purlie Houston Reynolds, Jr., Agnes Louise Reynolds, Lilly Mae Reynolds Forte, Hattie Elizabeth Reynolds Blanton, Julian Alexander (Bud) Reynolds, James Fulton (Monk) Reynolds, Lina Frances Reynolds Gnann, Carroll Wooster Reynolds, and Henry Eugene (Hank) Reynolds.

After graduating from Winthrop College in 1934, Elizabeth Reynolds came to Horry County to teach school. She retired from teaching English for more than thirty years, with most of her distinguished career in the Floyds Township schools of Floyds High School, Floyds Elementary School and Mt. Olive Elementary School. A scholarship for community students attending North Greenville College was established in her name, The Elizabeth Reynolds Blanton Scholarship.

Mrs. Blanton was honored with citations including Star Teacher, Area Teacher of the Year, and Teacher Emeritus. Her professional society was Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary awarded membership for outstanding educators.

She married James P. Blanton on Christmas day in 1935 and they resided on the home farm for all of her married life, except for a couple of years in Charleston and Conway, SC.

Elizabeth Reynolds Blanton actively supported and participated in church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher for sixty years along with WMU, Vacation Bible School, and many church committees. In the early years, her family and her church were blessed with her beautiful singing voice and her unending love of quality music formats. As a member of the Mt. Olive Choir, she sang solos often, and she joined in duets with Ethel Small, a beautiful male tenor voice.

Mrs. Blanton joined her husband in active participation in protecting renewable natural resources. She was a member of South Carolina Conservation Districts Auxiliary for many years, attending every regional and state conservation district meeting and tour for years. Together, they also attended a number of national conventions.

The Playcard Environmental Education Center, now under the oversight of Horry County School District, has recognized Elizabeth Blanton as a valuable part of the establishment and continuation of the center, a place which was so much a part of her husband's last active years.

Mrs. Blanton was a long time member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Educational Society, an avid reader and patron of Horry County Library System, a loving and faithful wife and mother. She was noted for her outstanding cooking and her orderly and well kept house and yards. In recent years, she was active in the activities of the Floyds/Mt. Olive/Green Sea Senior Citizens Chapter.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2005, from the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Mt. Olive Church Road, in the Green Sea-Floyds community, with the Rev. Phil Fishbach officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. at the church.
