Charles Cyrus Cook and his wife, Mary Ann Swift Cook, with their two little children, George and Mary Ann came to the United States from Boston, Lincolnshire, England in the early 1840's. Charles applied for his citizen ship on June 22, 1847. Their other four children were born in New York: Caroline, Enos, Edmund and Charles Jr. They resided in Williamsville, near Buffalo and Waterloo, New York. At Waterloo he built a large furniture and undertaking factory. No records of when they came to Iowa, but from an old account book of his, he was still in business at Waterloo, New York in the year of 1855, then it begins again with the names from the Troy Mills area in the year 1858. He must have came to Iowa prior to moving here or else purchased land by mail.

Charles Cyrus Cook Sr. operated a saw mill on the south side of the Wapsipinicon River, and made furniture and caskets. He had a ledger which is still in the family. The saw mill eventually was swept away in a flood. Charles Cook Jr. and Enos purchased an old rickety ferry from Independence, Iowa, to haul people across the river but it was not dependable. Then a foot bridge was built of lumber and lime rock, from the saw mill north across the river to the other side to a feed mill. When Charles Cyrus Cook Sr. purchased land for a cemetery, when told his family, his daughter Mary Ann Hurlburt laughed about who would be the first person buried there. The first person buried there was her. She has a stone. When her parents died they did not want tombstones and were buried under a tree or trees by the road. They have been found on Enos Cook lot with no stones. Probably the trees were on this hill at that time. Charles Cyrus Cook Sr. will was probated August 4, 1865 in Linn County, Iowa. Charles C. Cook was married to Mary Swift in England but do not know the date. She is buried in this cemetery. Charles and Mary Swift Cook were parents of 6 children:

1. George Cook buried Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion, Iowa.

2. Mary Ann Cook married Charles H. Hulbert and is buried in this cemetery.

3. Caroline Cook married Isaac Newton Holman and is buried in this cemetery.

4. Enos Cook buried this cemetery.

5. Edmund Cook buried this cemetery.

6. Charles Cyrus Cook Jr. buried this cemetery.
