Oliver went to an army induction center during WWI, at Chattanooga, TN. He was rejected because of his poor eyesight. Oliver and Pauline Meinhardt were married 3 Jun 1919 at Compton Hill Congregational Church in the City of St. Louis. He was a graduate of Ranken Trade School.

He ran a hardware store in St. Louis for many years. After the death of his wife he worked for several large hardware chains before opening a manufacturer's agency for toys and novelities.
