William Durrant Mendenhall, age 92, of Burley, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Highland Estates Assisted Living in Burley.
Bill was born on Dec. 20, 1917, in Preston, Idaho, the son of Loren Matthew and Agnes Elvira (Durrant) Mendenhall. He received his education in Preston, and graduated from Preston High School. While in high school, he was the Golden Glove Boxing Champion. He fell in love with Dorothy Loretta Maughan and they were married on May 4, 1938, in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived and farmed for many years in Bridgeport.
In 1953, they moved to Twin Falls, where they owned and operated the S&M Market and the UTOCO Service Station, where Bill shared his excellent mechanical skills. Later, they lived in Pocatello for five years and then moved to Burley in 1967. Bill worked at Ore-Ida for a short time prior to purchasing Fred and Wayne's Tire Center in Burley, which he operated until retirement. However, Bill was never one to sit still so he took on the responsibility as the service manager at Young Ford, and later worked for the Idaho Grain Inspection Service until age 81.
Bill loved the youth and served as a baseball coach for many years with his teams winning many championship tournaments. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and had received the Silver Beaver Award. During his seasoned years, he worked with the Cassia County School District as a mentor and tutor for many students who were struggling in school.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully throughout his life. In his youth he received the Master M-Men Award. He had served on the stake high council in Pocatello and Burley, and was a faithful Young Men's basketball and softball coach. Bill was bishop of the Burley 5th Ward and when the 11th Ward was formed he served as its first bishop. He and his beloved wife, Dorothy, enjoyed their calling as stake dance directors while living in Preston and were able to take many youth to the annual June Conferences in Salt Lake City, Utah, to participate in the dance festivals. In their later years, they served in the California Riverside Mission, where they taught many of the Native Americans to love the gospel and to love life itself.
Bill was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed tying his own flies. He also liked gardening and woodworking.
He is survived by four sons and their spouses, Larry (Lori) Mendenhall of Highland, Utah; Clair (Linda) Mendenhall of Providence, Utah; Curtis (Mary) Mendenhall of Burley; and Brent (Suzan) Mendenhall of Rexburg; a daughter-in-law, Trish Mendenhall of Albion; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bill Mendenhall; three sisters; and three brothers.
