Abel Carter was born 15 Aug 1835 in Morgan Co. IN, the son of John Carter and Hannah Stanley Carter. His father, John, died in 1861, and in 1863, his mother Hannah, and eight of her ten living children moved with two other families by covered wagon to Iowa.

Abel married Eunice Davis 23 Nov 1869 in Marshall County, IA. Both the Carter and Davis families were members of the Society of Friends(Quakers). They had four children:
James D., Rachel Jane, Nathan Frederick, and Asa Leroy.

The family lived in Iowa, Kansas and then returned to Iowa before settling near Plato, Texas County, MO, about 1890. Eunice died 21 May 1905 in Plato.
