"Samuel W. Malone, of Eugene, the father of Wesley Malone, one of our County Commissioners, died at 5:30 o'clock on last Monday morning. He had been in poor health for some time, and his death was no surprise to his relatives and personal friends. Two or three years ago, he was in a buggy with his son James Malone, ex trustee of that township, when the horse they were driving became frightened, and the old gentleman, getting scared, jumped out, dislocating his hip joint, from the effects of which he never recovered. His strength being greatly reduced, he was less able to resist disease. A few weeks ago, he was taken with the grip, which was followed by a fever, and he gradually grew weaker until death relieved him from all trouble and pain here below.

The deceased was born in Ross County, OH, on June 10, 1810, and had he lived until the 10th of next June he would have been 82 years of age. He was reared to the vocation of a farmer, and in his youth received but limited educational advantages. He moved with his parents to Helt Township, this county, in 1824, and in 1827 to Eugene Township, where he continued to live up to the day of his death.

He followed agricultural pursuits as a means of support, and had succeeded in accumulating 455 acres of splendid farming lands, besides owning the large brick hotel in Eugene. He was a man of great energy and good business tact, and by his industry and economy he left quite a fortune to his wife and children. He was a man well respected, and had the good will of his neighbors and acquaintances. He was a good, jolly old man, and never intentionally wronged a person in his life.

His funeral occurred at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the discourse being preached by Rev. T.D. Fyffe, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at that place, after which his remains were followed to the cemetery by his heart stricken wife and children, and there quietly laid to rest." - Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, February 17, 1892 (Obit provided by Carolyn Schwab)
