William Baynard Whaley, Jr. was born on Edisto Island, SC. He was the son of William Baynard Whaley and Martha Mary Hanahan, and was affectionately known to the family as 'Nicky'.

He served in the Confederate States Army, from 1861 to 1865. Wm. Baynard Whaley, Pvt Co I, 3rd Cav, Rebel Troop, Edisto Island, SC.

William Baynard Whaley married Helen Jones Smith, in Pendleton, SC., August 29th, 1865. Helen was the daughter of William Burrows Smith and Frances Susan Smith, of Charleston.

They had six children together, four who survived to adulthood.

William's first wife Helen, died of typhoid fever at the age of 59, Mar. 9, 1906, in Charleston, SC.

His second marriage was to one Lillian Currier, 44, daughter of Samuel and Helen Currier, on April 4, 1907 in Boston. The two soon returned to reside in Whaley's home in Charleston,SC.

He passed away Feb. 12, 1921, at age 77, at his home at 99 Broad Street, in Charleston, SC. He was cremated, and his widow eventually moved with his ashes back to her hometown of Cambridge, Ma. When she passed several years later, she was cremated as well. The family buried both of their ash urns together in the Currier family plot, in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Mount Auburn dates back as one of the first Victorian era rural cemeteries that came into popularity, along with Green-Wood in Brooklyn, NY, and Magnolia in Charleston, SC.

Funeral Services Will Be Held This Afternoon at St. Michael's

Mr William Baynard Whaley died at his residence, No. 99 Broad Street late Saturday night. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at St. Michael's Church. The Rev S Cary Beckwith officiating. Mr Whaley is survived by his widow, and by two sons, Congressman Richard S. Whaley and W.B.S.Whaley of New York.

Before retiring from business several years ago, Mr. Whaley was active in several fields having been particularly interested in the cotton business. He was a one time a member of the firm of Whaley & Rivers, cotton factors and was president of the T.P. Smith-McLiver Co., a firm of rice planters. He was a director of the People's National Bank, and a veteran of the Civil War, Mr Whaley was a member of Camp Sumter, U.C.V.

The following will be pallbearers: Messrs John M Rivers, H.C.Robertson, E.P. Grice, R Goodwyn Rhett, W Walston Pringle, John F Maybank, Charles Gibbon, and Dr J.J. LaRocke. J.M.Connelly Co has charge of the funeral arrangements.
