Mrs. Avis Allen, 88 of Temple, Texas, went home to her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at her home. She died peacefully in her sleep.
Avis was born in Rising Star, Texas to Clinton and Rhew Barrick on November 3, 1922. She grew up in Abernathy, Texas with seven older siblings. She was the last surviving sibling. Avis married Roland Fuchs in 1940. They had one daughter, Eva LaVerne, in 1943. Roland was killed in an automobile/bus accident in 1944. Avis used the insurance money from his death to enroll in Texas Tech earning a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1948. During her college years, Avis was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Sorority, on the Junior Council, selected to be in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities as well as a member of the Senior Forum and president of the Home Economics Club. In her senior year at Tech, she met Woody Allen. They married in July 1949 and had two more daughters, Cathy Sue in 1953 and Carole Ann in 1955. Woody and Avis were married for 59 years when Woody died in 2008. Avis was his caregiver the last few years of his life and she considered it her joy and privilege to do so.
Avis was always a servant especially to her family. Her grandchildren were often the recipient of her unconditional love and care. Avis was "Grandma" to 13 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren with one on the way. Avis was always a very generous giver both to her family and to numerous ministries around the world.
Avis was multi-talented and had a very full life. All these gifts and talents flowed from her relationship with the Lord. She was always very active in her church and often taught Bible studies. She was a gifted teacher and loved the Word. She was an accomplished artist, a wonderful cook and seamstress and won numerous awards. Her family loved her yeast rolls more than anything else in life. Avis worked as a home ec teacher in the early years of her marriage to Woody. Later, she worked as a consulting dietitian for several different nursing homes.
Avis was always very artistic but once she retired, her artistic abilities really blossomed. She loved working with colored pencils and was especially talented in capturing her grandchildren on canvas and paper. Her favorite poem was L'Envoi by Rudyard Kipling and she always said she was looking forward to "Splashing at a ten-league (30 miles) canvas with brushes of comets' hair".
Avis left a lasting legacy in her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren and it was her dearest hope and belief that each one would come to a saving relationship with Jesus and we would all be reunited again in Heaven. She leaves three daughters, Eva, Cathy and Carole, one son-in-law, Gary Rude, 13 grandchildren, Lisa Johnson, John McCasland, Matt McCasland, Amanda Hail, Jordan Rude, Timothy Oakes, Rebekah Vinyard, Kathryn Adams, Caleb Rude, Jacob Rude, Victoria Oakes, Charles Oakes and Meredith Rude.
