Carrie Melissa Wiles, a daughter of Elizabeth Ann (née Nelson) and Henry Greenberry Wiles, was born 30 May 1861 in Jefferson, Frederick County, Maryland. When Carrie was about 6½ years old, her mother died, and Carrie was afterwards brought up by her stepmother and maternal aunt Melissa.

Carrie M. Wiles and Jacob Bodmer, Jr., were married on 20 January 1887 at St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. The couple became the parents of eight children. The first three children, born from 1887 to 1890, were born in Middleburg, Loudoun County, Virginia. The family moved across the Potomac River to Montgomery County, Maryland, where the couple's fourth child was born in 1892 in Darnestown, and the final four children were born from 1893 to 1899 in Poolesville. After Jacob Bodmer passed away in 1928, Carrie Bodmer resided with her daughter Jessie Campbell in Mount Rainier, Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Rainier, Wednesday night at 9 o'clock, aged 77 years, 10 months, 2 days. The following children survive: Mrs. George Chiswell, Mrs. Frederick Campbell and George Bodmer, Mt. Rainer, Roy Bodmer, Beallsville; Rozier Bodmer, Poolesville; Mrs. Stockton Myrley, Montgomery, W. Va. Funeral Saturday from the home of Mrs. Campbell at 12 o'clock noon, with services in the Poolesville Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock. Interment Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville. William B. The submitter's mother, when a young child, met her great-aunt Carrie, recalling her as being proud of her Nelson family heritage and very proper—offended at being served a slice of pie for dessert on her used dinner plate, rather than on a clean dessert plate.
