On July 5, 1837, in Clyde, Ohio, Christian married Catharine Rathbun. The ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace Oliver Comstock, a close friend of the young couple.
They started housekeeping on a tract of land consisting of nearly 240 acres in Section 18, Green Creek Township, in a large log cabin on the opposite side of Green Creek from that of his parents. Christian prospered to the extent that he bought more land. Few families in the newly settled area were fortunate to own horses, but he had a team, along with two yokes of oxen. The roads were hardly more than trails, grists were carried on horseback to the mill. It is said that on many trips he took his squirrel rifle along, and on one of these trips shot three deer, many times wild turkeys. The Indians from the Seneca Reservation nearby often came to borrow this same rifle.
In 1861 Christian started to build a brick home on Finnefrock Road. It was finished about six months before he died.
In 1864, Catharine was quite ill. Christian rode his horse to Stem Town (now Green Springs) to get medicine for her. On the way home an animal jumped out and frightened Christian's horse. The horse reared. Christian fell off and broke his leg. He managed to mount his horse again and ride home but he never fully recovered from this accident. He died at his home on Finnefrock Road. Catherine lived in this home until her death. The family did not use her room after this. It was kept as she had it.
Christian and Catharine had twelve children: Chaplin Rathbun, Eliza Margaret, Noah B, Wilson Shannon, Francis Darius, Burr, Maurice Lemmon, Mary Jane, Oliver Perry, Barbara Ellen, Saxton Peter, and Earl Christian.
