James Huss was the sixth child of Noah Jacob Huss and Mary Burkholder.

James married Rebecca Young in 1842 in Sandusky County, Ohio. James and Rebecca had children: William Burton, Milton Riley, Emory Milo, and Ambert Emmett. James and Rebecca lived in Ohio, and Steuben and LaGrange County in Indiana. During the gold rush they went to California, then to Hillsdale County, Michigan and then to Texas where Rebecca died.

After Rebecca passed, James married Eliza Van Doren in Sandusky County, Ohio in 1855. James and Eliza had children: Cora, Ada, Murray James, Olive, and Helen.

James died in the Michigan Asylum from "exhaustion."
