Janice Williams Carkin, 89, formerly of Rockland, passed away March 23, 2006 at her home with loved ones at her side and her beloved little dog ‘Holly' next to her.

Janice was born on November 12, 1916 in Rochester, New York, the second daughter of Seth and Alice Carkin. Janice graduated in 1937 from Oberlin College with a double major; and over the next 11 years, taught at University of Vermont, Saint Olaf, University of Nebraska and Oberlin College, before settling into San Jose.

In 1952 Janice finished her post-graduate work, receiving her Doctorate from Stanford University and winning a PI LAMBDA THETA Award for her dissertation research.

Janice moved to southern California in 1982 to live near friends after retiring from San Jose State University after teaching for 28 years in that institution's Department of Physical Education for Women.

Janice was very close to her older sister, Mary "Billie" Johnson who passed away in 1995

Predeceased by her parents and her sister, she is survived by a brother-in-law, Stewart Johnson; a niece, Janibeth Johnson; a nephew, Seth Johnson and his wife Jean; a grand-nephew, David Johnson, his wife Becky and their children Kayleigh & Alexa Janice; a grand-niece, Alice McKeever, her husband Bob and their children Morgan and Sarah; and by a great many friends and people who loved her.
