DEATH COMES TO PIONEER UNION COUNTY FARMER:
Rites Held Last Tuesday for Chauncey Maynard at Richland Church

Chauncey Claud Maynard, a longtime resident of Union county South Dakota, passed away Saturday, December 20, 1947, at the Akron [Iowa] Hospital, following a lingering illness.
.
Chauncey, son of Solomon and [Mary] Arvilla Maynard, was born September 24, 1871, on the Maynard homestead, near Richland, in Union county, S.D., where he spent his youth. He was a member of the Sons of the Veterans Fife and Drum Corps and was also a member of the Richland Band. [NOTE: The "Maynard Family Bible" lists date of birth for Chauncey Maynard as September 24, 1872].
On March 5, 1896, he was united in marriage with ADA HELEN FATE at Elk Point, S.D. The family lived near Richland until 1926, when they moved to Iowa and lived there for a number of years until their return to Union county [S.D.] in 1941, where they have lived since. In 1946 they celebrated their golden wedding.

When Mr. Maynard was five years old, his mother [Mary Arvilla Crane Maynard], with her father [Chauncey Ellis Crane], sister and cousin, were drowned when they were fording the Big Sioux river. He was also preceded in death by his father, a sister and three brothers.
.
He farmed in the Richland community all his life and made numerous friends, who, in turn, held him in high esteem for his many excellent qualities.
.
Surviving him are his widow and six children. Four sons, Claud, Sidney, and Dewey of the home vicinity, and Ira, of Sioux City [Iowa]; two daughters, Mrs. Cloie [Maynard] Nearman, of McCook Lake, S.D., and Mrs. Loie [Maynard] Beach, of near Akron [Iowa]; seven grandsons and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Otis Maynard, and a sister, Lillie [Maynard] Cook, both of Akron vicinity, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 23, at 1:30 at the house and 2:00 p.m. at the Richland Methodist church, and interment was in the Richland, South Dakota cemetery. Pallbearers were four grandsons and two nephews, Lawrence Maynard, Roger Nearman, Kenneth and Wayne Beach, Porter Maynard and Ernest Anderson.

When the sun is bright and strong
And the dew is glittering sharply
Over the lawn;
When the waves are laughing loudly
Along the shore;
And the birds are singing sweetly
About the door;
With a long day's work before you,
You rise up with the sun,

But remember that I may be next
To come in at the door,
To call you from your busy work
Forevermore.'

*Salmon Maynard of Richland [South Dakota] was in town Tuesday.
He had just returned from a hospital in Sioux City [Iowa] where he was for six weeks following an operation, and is very much improved in health. Mr. Maynard will be 79 years on the 10th day of January and has lived in Union County [South Dakota] forty-six years. He came here from Minnesota and settled on a homestead two miles north of Richland [S.D.], where he now lives. At that time the Indians were plentiful.
W.H.H. Fate, Chris Lewison, Mrs. Fetterman and Celina Crill are persons living in that community who were there when he came.
**Mrs. Maynard [Mary Arvilla CRANE Maynard] and her father [Chauncey Ellis Crane] were drowned in the Sioux River some thirty-six years ago. They were the parents of six children, four of whom are now living, Mrs. Lillie [Maynard] Cook of Sioux City, and Elthina, Chauncey and Otis [Maynard], who are living on their farms.
Mr. Maynard is one of the prominent farmers of this section, owning a section of land in the Sioux valley. It is the wish of this paper that he may live many more years to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
