Like his father, Phineas was a ship captain who sailed from Searsport (Waldo County) Maine according to the book Searsport Sea Captains by Colonel Frederick Frasier Black (1960) p. 50. According to that source, he sailed on the following vessels: the schooner F.A. Heath (1849), the brig Keoka (1849-1853), the bark Trovatore (1854), the schooner Abaco (1857-1858), the ship Charter Oak (1864), the bark Augustine Kobbe (1866, 1875) and the ship William Chamberlain. During Captain Carver's later years, he entered the Sailors' Snug Harbor retirement home on Staten Island,in New York City, in 1890, and died there in 1893.
