Private James Parks
Served with Co. C 83rd New York Vol. Inf. During the Civil war of 1861-65. He used to brag that at the Battle of Gettysburg a chunk of Canster that was fired from a Rebel cannon struck him full in the forehead after bouncing off his rifle knocking him out. When he woke up he said the battle was over with and he had been put amoung the dead to be buried, Quote " I only woke up when the damn darkiees picked me up to drop me in the grave they had just dug for me, When I told them I wasn't dead the damn N---er asked "Are you sure" Well I let out a string of cuss words that would make a drill Sgt. blush and that convinced them I was still among the living! They later took me to the surgeon but only after they buried some other poor mothers son in the hole they dug for me, It was only after I got to the hospital that I realsed they had robbed me of my watch and $5 of my money and $200 in that Rebel script I was keeping for when we went back down south. This story was told to me by the Great Great Great Grand Daughter of James Parks. And she even showed me it in writing as it was in a Book Called Camp Fire Chats Of The Civil War. Printed 1880 And it was a book of old soldiers reminiscences of the Civil war told at GAR Camp fires during National & State Encampments. So James Parks Story was even in writing. Any way after the War James came to Nevada in the late 1860s And went to work in the Opra Mine Gristmill (Were rocks from the mines were ground up to remove the Gold & Silver ore) He died Jan 21 1886 at age 47 of Pneumona brought on by his weak lungs because of him breathing in the rock dust at the Gristmill.
