WILLIAM BASSETT was born on December 17, 1702 in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, the son of Nathan and Mary (Huckins) Bassett. William married ANNA MAYHEW about 1726. She was born in 1710 and died on September 25, 1780. Like others of the family he held prominent positions in the town and was a man of considerable wealth. His will dated June 22, 1779 was probated on January 2, 1783, and the inventory of his estate showed property to the value of £527-15-2.

i. Nathaniel, b. 16 Nov 1727, d. 1804; m. Katherine Boardman, 2 May 1788.

ii. MARY, b. 1730, d. 12 July 1799; m. Nathan Bassett [son of William Bassett V and Lydia Smith], 9 June 1763.

iii. BARACHIAH, b. abt. 1732, d. 13 June 1813; m. Mercy Bourne, 4 June 1761.

iv. NATHAN, b. (1735).

v. ANNA, bapt. 19 Oct. 1740; prob. d. y.

vi. FORTUNATUS, b. 1742, d. 27 December 1778; m. Sarah Bassett (daughter of Cornelius and Lydia (Norton) Bassett) 9 February 1769.

vii. SUSANNA, b. (1744); m. Hilliard Mayhew 16 Feb 1764.

viii. ABIGAIL, b. 1746, d. 5 November 1791; m. Jeremiah Mayhew 3 March 1768.

William Bassett's gravestone was apparently intact in 1904 as it is recorded in Vital Records of Chilmark, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New-England Historic Genealogical Society (Boston, Mass. 1904) at page 85, but no cemetery is mentioned:

William is most likely buried in Abel's Hill Cemetery, also known as Chilmark Cemetery. William's parents are buried in the same cemetery.
